Who is Santiago Calatrava?

Santiago Calatrava is a Spanish architect, engineer and artist who is known worldwide for his striking and futuristic buildings. He was born in Valencia in 1951 and went on to become one of the most recognisable architects of his generation.

Calatrava is known for buildings in which architecture and engineering are closely connected. His designs often feature large, open structures, flowing lines and forms inspired by nature, the human body or movement. As a result, many of his buildings almost resemble large sculptures.

What makes Calatrava particularly distinctive is that he does not limit himself to a single discipline. Alongside architecture, he works in civil engineering, sculpture, painting and drawing. These different disciplines influence one another in his work. For Calatrava, an architectural design therefore does not begin solely with a practical question, but often also with an exploration of form, movement and structure.

His buildings can be found all over the world, from major railway stations and bridges to museums and cultural centres. Well-known examples include the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias in Valencia, the Milwaukee Art Museum in the United States and the Oculus in New York.

Calatrava has therefore developed a distinctive position within contemporary architecture. His buildings are not only designed to serve a particular function, but also aim to create a strong visual and spatial experience.

How did Santiago Calatrava become an architect?

Santiago Calatrava began his education at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, where he studied architecture. During his studies, he became increasingly interested in the technical side of buildings and the way structures can create form and movement.

After completing his architectural education, Calatrava moved to Switzerland, where he studied civil engineering at ETH Zurich. There, he further developed his knowledge of structures, mathematics and engineering. He eventually completed his doctorate at the same university, researching structures and their load-bearing capacity.

This combination of architecture and engineering became fundamental to his career. While architects and engineers often have separate roles, Calatrava wanted to bring the two disciplines together. He saw structure not simply as something that made a building stable, but also as an important part of its design.

Alongside his technical and architectural education, Calatrava continued to work on drawing and sculpture. He produced many sketches and sculptures exploring movement, human anatomy and natural forms. These studies later became an important source of inspiration for his architecture.

What characterises the architecture of Santiago Calatrava?

Santiago Calatrava's architecture is particularly recognisable for its combination of engineering, movement and natural forms. His buildings often have a sculptural character and sometimes resemble living structures, such as a skeleton, wing, eye or shell.

An important characteristic is the use of large, open structures. Calatrava often deliberately leaves structural elements visible, making the way a building is supported part of the design. Columns, arches, cables and supporting structures therefore serve not only a technical function, but also help determine the appearance of the building.

Movement also plays an important role in his work. Some buildings contain moving elements, while in others movement is suggested visually through curved lines, repeating structures and forms that appear to expand or rise upwards. This gives his buildings a dynamic character.

Nature is another important source of inspiration. Calatrava studies natural structures and human anatomy and translates these into architecture. The way a skeleton or body accommodates movement and forces, in particular, can be seen in several of his designs.

At the same time, Calatrava uses modern materials such as steel, concrete and glass to make these forms possible. The combination of technical precision and organic forms gives his buildings a distinctly futuristic and sculptural appearance.

Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias – Valencia

The Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias in Valencia is one of Calatrava's best-known projects. The enormous complex consists of several buildings dedicated to science, art and culture. The white structures feature large curved forms and, in some places, resemble the skeleton of an animal or a huge shell.

The complex demonstrates how Calatrava uses architecture to create a strong visual experience. Together, the buildings form a futuristic cityscape in which water, structure and architecture are closely connected.

Milwaukee Art Museum – Milwaukee

For the Milwaukee Art Museum in the United States, Calatrava designed the Quadracci Pavilion, which opened in 2001. The most striking feature is the large movable structure above the building, known as the Brise Soleil.

The structure consists of large wing-like elements that can open and close. This makes the building appear almost to move and gives the architecture a strong sculptural character.

The Turning Torso in Malmö is one of Calatrava's best-known buildings and a striking example of his interest in movement and human anatomy. The residential tower consists of nine cube-shaped sections that rotate in relation to one another, making the building appear to twist.

The form is based on a sculpture of a twisted human body that Calatrava created earlier. Architecture and sculpture therefore come together quite literally in this project.

Oculus – New York

The Oculus in New York is a major transport hub that forms part of the World Trade Center complex. The building consists of a long, white structure with rib-like elements rising upwards on both sides.

The design is often associated with a bird spreading its wings. At the same time, the large central hall creates an open and light-filled space. The building once again demonstrates how Calatrava combines a functional transport hub with a striking architectural form.

Criticism of Santiago Calatrava

Although Santiago Calatrava is admired worldwide for his distinctive architecture, his work also regularly receives criticism. The high construction costs, delays, maintenance problems and technical complexity of some projects are among the main concerns.

Some of the criticism relates to the ambitious forms of his buildings. The complex structures are often more expensive and difficult to realise than more traditional architecture. Some of his buildings are also relatively demanding to maintain. Several projects have experienced problems after completion, including leaks, damage or higher maintenance costs than originally expected.

Questions are also sometimes raised about whether the spectacular form of a building is always proportionate to its function. Critics argue that Calatrava's architecture can sometimes place too much emphasis on visual impact, making it less practical or efficient.

At the same time, this ambition is an important part of Calatrava's work. He aims to push boundaries and create buildings in which engineering, art and architecture come together. The discussion surrounding his work therefore illustrates that architecture is not only about what is technically or aesthetically possible, but also about cost, usability, maintenance and how a building functions over the long term.

The criticism does not make Calatrava's work any less interesting. Instead, it shows that innovative architecture often exists in a tension between ambition, beauty, engineering and practical feasibility.
