Introducing
Shiva Vase by Ettore Sottsass
At first glance, the Shiva Vase by Ettore Sottsass might look like a rather cheeky design object. Its distinctive shape is hard to miss and may even bring something quite unexpected to mind. But behind its playful appearance lies a deeper meaning. Designed in 1973, the Shiva Vase is inspired by the ancient Hindu symbol known as the linga, associated with the god Shiva. Combining spirituality, sensuality and a touch of humour, it is a design that continues to spark curiosity.
the story behind the
shiva vase
The story of the Shiva Vase is closely connected to Sottsass’s fascination with different cultures and religious symbolism. During his travels in India in the 1960s, he encountered temples and traditional objects that left a lasting impression on him. One of these was the linga, a symbolic representation associated with Shiva and often depicted in a phallic form.
In 1973, Sottsass translated this inspiration into a vase for BD Barcelona. Rather than simply reproducing a religious symbol, he gave it a new interpretation through contemporary design. What emerged was an object that balances the sacred with the playful, challenging the boundaries between art, sculpture and everyday objects.
the design
playing with perception
The Shiva Vase is instantly recognisable by its smooth, rounded form and distinctive proportions. Its sculptural silhouette is deliberately simple, with a symmetrical shape that gives the object a strong presence despite its relatively compact size.
Its bright pink colour adds another layer to the design. The glossy finish and vivid colour create a playful contrast with the spiritual symbolism behind its form. This combination of bold colour, unusual shapes and unexpected references is characteristic of Sottsass’s approach to design.
More than just a flower vase, Shiva can be appreciated as a small sculpture in its own right. It is an object that invites a second look and often starts a conversation.
The designer
ettore sottsass
Ettore Sottsass (1917–2007) was an influential Italian architect and designer whose work challenged conventional ideas about design. Throughout his career, he worked across different disciplines, including architecture, furniture, ceramics and product design.
He became internationally recognised for his work with Olivetti, particularly the design of the Valentine typewriter. In 1981, he founded the Memphis Group, a design collective known for its bold colours, unusual shapes and playful approach to furniture and objects.
Although the Shiva Vase predates the founding of Memphis, it already reflects many of the ideas that would become central to the movement. Its expressive form and use of colour show Sottsass's interest in creating objects that go beyond function.
the material
Pink Glazed Ceramic
The Shiva Vase is made from ceramic with a glossy pink glaze. The glazed surface gives the vase its smooth finish and brings out the intensity of its colour. At the same time, the ceramic material gives the sculptural form a solid and substantial feel.
Measuring approximately 23 cm in height, the vase is compact enough to fit on a shelf, side table or windowsill. Whether used to display a few flowers or simply placed on its own, the Shiva Vase makes a distinctive statement in any interior.
The Shiva Vase
in Contemporary Interiors
Despite being designed in 1973, the Shiva Vase continues to feel relevant in contemporary interiors. Its sculptural shape and vibrant pink colour make it stand out, whether placed in a minimalist setting or surrounded by other expressive design objects. It adds a playful contrast to more understated furniture and materials, while fitting naturally into interiors that embrace colour, art and unusual forms.
The vase does not necessarily need flowers to make an impression. Its distinctive silhouette allows it to function as a decorative object on its own, almost like a small sculpture. Placed on a shelf, side table or cabinet, the Shiva Vase brings character to a space without needing much around it.
What makes the design particularly interesting is its ability to attract attention without following a passing trend. More than fifty years after its creation, the Shiva Vase remains an example of how a bold idea and a strong visual identity can give an everyday object a lasting place in interior design.
