1. everything starts with a idea

Everything starts with a sketch. How will a handmade ceramic mug feel in the hand? What style do you want to create? Studio Palu focuses on making unique, eye-catching mugs that immediately stand out. The base of a handmade mug is simple, but the handle always receives a unique design. The colors also make a statement. Together, shape and color ensure that the mug’s design is striking, cheerful, and completely distinctive.

2. The material

The foundation of every object begins with carefully selected clay. This clay is first thoroughly kneaded and prepared to achieve the right consistency, creating a strong and durable base for ceramic mugs, plates, or vases. Only with well-prepared clay can the shapes be beautifully finished, and the ceramic mugs remain sturdy enough for daily use. Moreover, the quality and type of clay also determine how the final glaze and colors come to life, making each piece both functionally and aesthetically perfect. Studio Palu works with slip clay.

3. Shaping

The liquid slip clay is poured into the molds. During this process, Studio Palu must work quickly, otherwise the clay dries too fast. Once the clay is firm enough and has cooled, the ceramic mug is carefully removed from the molds.

4. Attaching the handles

After the mugs are removed from the molds, the handles are carefully attached. Each handle is shaped by hand, giving it a unique character. Using liquid clay, the handles are securely and precisely fixed, ensuring a perfect fit on the mug and preparing it for the further finishing process.

5. Time to fire!

The shaped pieces are given time to dry slowly. Only when they are completely dry can they be fired for the first time. This initial firing is called the “bisque.” During this process, the mugs are placed in a special pottery kiln and heated to about 1000°C.

Through this first firing, the clay transforms into bisque. It becomes hard and sturdy while still remaining porous enough to absorb glaze.

6. Glazing for the finishing touch

In the penultimate step, glazing, each handmade mug gains its unique character. Glossy, matte, colorful, or subtle, every detail is carefully chosen and meticulously applied. During this process, the mugs acquire their distinctive color and appearance, completing the design. The glaze also protects the mugs, giving them that special finish that makes them not only beautiful but also durable and suitable for everyday use.

7. baking for the last time

After glazing, the mugs are fired in the kiln for a second time. This time at a higher temperature of about 1200°C. During this firing, the bisque transforms into stoneware ceramic.

The firing process is slow. The kiln is gradually heated and cooled even more slowly. The entire firing process takes about 24 hours. Only once the kiln has fully cooled can the mugs be removed. The result is a handmade ceramic mug that is not only beautiful and unique but also timeless and functional.
